The World Union of Olympic Cities

The World Union of Olympic Cities is an association for cities that wish to associate themselves with the Olympic Movement.It was founded by the city of Lausanne - the Olympic Capital, the city of Athens - host city of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, and the International Olympic Committee.

The objectives of the World Union of Olympic Cities are to:

  • offer a platform for an exchange of experience and competencies between Olympic Games host cities and Olympic Games candidate cities in consultation with the International Olympic Committee,
  • offer competencies, experience and general assistance to candidate cities for the continued success of the Olympic Games,
  • study the impact of the Olympic Games on host cities in consultation with the International Olympic Committee, particularly in terms of sustainable development,
  • promote the contemporary Olympic Cities as international centers for sport, culture and international development,
  • promote the educational values of the Olympic movement,
  • increase the link between cultural initiatives and Olympic institutions,
  • support the cities that integrate the Olympic values with the aim of promoting peace.
