Lausanne, November 10, 2009 – The Mayor of the latest Olympic City to be elected, Mayor M. Eduardo Paes of Rio de Janeiro, will be in the Olympic Capital to attend the Lausanne Summit, November 19 – 21.

As the newest Olympic host, the Mayor of Rio will have the opportunity to learn from previous Olympic cities, while also offering inspiration to cities that have Olympic ambitions for the future.

Over 30 Olympic Cities have confirmed their attendance at the Lausanne Summit. A strong mixture of past, future and potential Olympic hosts cities will come together to discuss a variety of themes related to bidding for, hosting and benefiting from the Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee’s President, Dr. Jacques Rogge, as well as Director General, Urs Lacotte, Olympic Games Executive Director, Mr. Gilbert Felli, and Head of Bid Relations, Ms. Jacqueline Barrett, will be among the speakers addressing the Olympic Cities during the conference.

Eager to learn from the experiences of Rio and other Olympic Cities in attendance, will also be the cities currently competing to become an Olympic host. With the 2016 election now in the past, focus turns to the race for the Winter Games 2018, and the Youth Olympic Games 2014. All three candidate cities for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games will be attending: Munich, Germany; PyeongChang, Korea; and Annecy, France. For the Youth Olympic Games, the bid for 2014 is in its final months, and the city of Poznan, Poland will be attending to listen closely to Singapore’s experience of preparing to host the first Youth Olympic Games in the Summer of 2010.

The Lausanne Summit will be the second gathering of Olympic Cities. The full programme, list of speakers and participant cities are now available on www.olympiccities.org. Hosted in the Olympic Capital, the Summit will bring together the Mayors of Cities who have organised, will organise, or are considering organising the Olympic or Youth Olympic Games.
